Research Statement

Earthquakes are among the most devastating natural phenomena on Earth, yet many of the processes that control when, where, and how they occur remain poorly understood. My research focuses on understanding earthquake cycles and how deformation evolves between, during, and after earthquakes across a wide range of timescales. Much of my work focuses on subduction zones, which produce some of the largest and most destructive earthquakes and tsunamis on Earth, including the 2004 Sumatra–Andaman and 2011 Tōhoku earthquakes.

I approach these questions by combining geodesy, geomorphology, physics-based numerical simulations, and data-driven methods, using each to illuminate a different part of the earthquake cycle. Modern geodetic observations capture deformation over years to decades, numerical models allow us to explore the physical processes governing entire earthquake cycles, while landscapes preserve a record of deformation accumulated over tens to hundreds of earthquakes. Together, these approaches provide complementary windows into parts of the earthquake cycle that no single method can capture on its own.

I am also passionate about developing open datasets, computational tools, and community infrastructure that turn individual research efforts into shared resources for the earthquake science community.
