For 50 years students camp across the country studying the land and its natural systems
Every summer professors and students in the department of Earth and environmental sciences load up a box truck full of supplies, hop into vans, and drive across the United States to explore and examine diverse landscapes, including visiting National Parks.
2024 marks 50 years of such adventure—called Field Camp. Immersed in the field setting for a month, students observe and notice things that would otherwise be difficult to see in the classroom. The sense of scope, for instance, is hard to miss as iconic landforms loom over the group.
This capstone experience uses the laboratory of Earth to study its natural systems. Students work on seven major projects, each comprised of field observations, data analysis, and reporting of findings.
